Heel lifts Orthotics and Height Increase

Heel lifts or Shoe Inserts are wedge-shaped supports, commonly made from silicone or pu (Polyurethane) materials, most often used under one or both heels to compensate for leg-length discrepancy problems, lower back pain, or to ease tension on the Achilles tendon or for other rehabilitation uses. Heel lifts can also be used to gain height. With certain types of heel lifts, adjustable heel lifts or shoe lifts, the individual layers can be removed to gain the right height when placed in the shoe. Heel lifts are not heel pads or heel cushions, heel lifts are not designed to absorb shock or spread pressure on the heel, but to raise one or both heels, for therapeutic needs, rehabilitation or height increase.

The use of heel lifts is a safe, discreet, and inexpensive alternative to other methods of treatment that have proven unsatisfactory or costly. When heel lifts are used correctly, the results can be quicker and studies have shown that approximately 75% of lower back pain can be eased. A large percentage of people require heel lifts or shoe lifts at some time in their lives, for many different reasons, achilles heel and tendonitis sufferers, runners, walkers, joggers and hikers have all benefited from Heel lifts or Shoe Inserts, golfers have improved their swing, many men and women have also found that heel lifts can improve self confidence and improve social standing.

There are countless and different heel lifts available, all offering many and varied benefits, comfort, height increase gain, durability, adjustability. A Well designed heel lift, should be long enough, reaching forward, beyond the arch, ideally filling the whole shoe. If the heel lifts are too short, foot problems can be caused. The heel lift or shoe insert, should incorporate a gentle even slope, too steep and the feet can slip forward whilst walking, again leading to possible problems and discomfort.

When selecting heel lifts, it must be considered, that you will probably need different heel lifts for different shoes. No heel lift or shoe insert will be ideal for all the different types of shoes you wear, also the therapeutic aspects and advantages of heel lifts are most effective when the heel lifts are used in all of your shoes, enabling you to be supported for as much of the time as is possible. It is also worth taking into account, whether your need for heel lifts is temporary or for the long-term.

The height increase you want from heel lifts,is a big factor in determining the heel lifts you require, orthotic experts agree that any more than 12mm (1/2") is not recommended, any more than this is considered at best uncomfortable but more important is the fact that too much of an increase in height, can possibly cause adverse effects, obviously the maximum height increase, will depend on the individual concerned and the style of the shoe used.

Adjustable heel lifts can offer many advantages, allowing the user to alter the height increase gained, by removing or adding individual layers, this is most useful when adding to your physical appearance, as a sudden increase in height can be a lot more noticeable than a gradual increase. Adjustable heel lifts or shoe inserts are also particularly beneficial to sufferers of leg length discrepancy issues as it is very seldom that both legs require the same height increase.
